Client Training Program

TPCS recognized the need for additional and alternative training opportunities for clients who were in between mandatory TANF/WFNJ training programs. As such, a small training program was developed and initiated by the agency that allows selected clients to participate in a social service training program. Clients participate in the training program for 35 hours per week and are taught the needed skills to work within a social service environment. Training includes: basic computer, office and telephone skills and personal communication skills.

Trainees are expected to assume leadership roles by helping new clients and families transition into the shelter community. All clients are provided with job referrals and additional opportunities to train in "real world" work environments. To date, the agency has trained 10 client peers; of these peers, 3 peers transitioned into full-time positions and 1 into a part-time position. Two other peers found employment in the private sector. TPCS' goal is to train and help employ as many clients as possible and assist them with maintaining themselves and their families in permanent housing. TPCS is currently looking for funding opportunities to expand this very needed and viable program.

Literacy Program

GED Remedial Study Program - This program was developed to assist clients who desire to take the GED exam but who need additional time to come up to speed to participate in a full GED program. Through a series of assessment test, TPCS recognized that many of the clients were in need of significant remedial education in order to adequately prepare them for taking the GED exam. In order to help many of the clients achieve their goal of taking the GED exam, this program was started in August 2004 to work with the clients to develop their basic math, reading, and English skills needed to successfully engage in a GED Preparation course and ultimately, have success in taking the GED exam.

GED Preparation Course - This program is designed to assist clients who possess the needed skills to the take the GED exam. Through a series of study courses in Language Arts (Reading Comprehension and Writing), Math, Science, Social Studies and practice tests, clients are prepared and motivated to take the GED exam with confidence.
